Summer Reading Program

The Language Arts department in the Middle/High School wants students to enjoy a great book (or two) during summer break. In preparation for the new school year, and to help ensure that no skills are lost, we have developed a summer reading program for students entering the sixth through twelfth grades. Students need to enhance their understanding of literature by reading texts that represent a variety of authors, styles, cultures and eras. The books were chosen to be age and grade level appropriate, entertaining, enjoyable, and based on students' need to read about and discuss books from a Christian perspective.

Carefully read and take notes on the book(s). The students should be completely finished reading the book(s) by the first day of school. They will be discussed and written about during the first few weeks back to school in English class. In grades 6-8 there is one required book. In high school grade 9-12 there are two required books (AP students have five summer books and others that will be required reading throughout the year).

Required reading list:

6th grade - Running Out of Time; Haddix, Margaret
7th grade - Found; Haddix, Margaret
8th grade - Hangman's Curse; Peretti, Frank
              - Nightmare Academy (optional follow up book; Peretti, Frank)
9th grade - Refined by Fire; Birdwell, Brian
              - A Christian fiction or non-fiction book of your choice (see note below)
10th grade - Castaway Kid; Mitchell, R.B.
                - A Christian fiction or non-fiction book of your choice (see note below)
11th grade - Gifted Hands; Carson, Ben w/Cecil Murphey
                - A Christian fiction or non-fiction book of your choice (see note below)
12th grade - Beowulf (Heaney translation); Anonymous
                - Who is My Enemy*; Rich Nathan
AP English  - Who is My Enemy*; Rich Nathan
                 - Pilgrim's Progress (Signet); Bunyan, John
                 - Beowulf (Heaney translation); Anonymous
                 - Odyssey (Fagles translation); Homer
                 - Mere Christianity; Lewis, C.S.

All books may either be purchased or possibly obtained at a library. We have asked Barnes and Noble at Easton to have our books available, but they can be purchased elsewhere. There are on-line bookstores that have great deals on new & used books: Amazon.com, Barnes&noble.com, etc.

*This title can be purchased at GCA's main administrative office Tuesdays-Wednesdays from 9:00-3:00.

NOTE: One of the books for the 9th-11th graders this year will be a Christian fiction or non-fiction book of the student's choice. THE STUDENT WILL NEED TO COMPLETE A BOOK REPORT ON THIS BOOK THAT WILL BE DUE ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. This report should be typed. See the requirements for this report listed below.
1) Identify the book's title, author's name, copyright date, and number of pages.
2) In 150-200 words, write a brief summary of the plot, including the beginning, the middle, and the end.
3) Explain the significance of the title. Why do you think the author chose the title?
4) Make a list of the main characters, and list 5 adjectives to describe each one. Describe your first impressions of the protagonist. Describe your first impressions of the antagonist. Cite at least 2 examples from the text to support your responses.
5) Write a 5-8 sentence response to one of the following:
a. What life lessons did you learn (or have been reinforced) from this book?
b. What did you like or dislike the most about the book? Explain using details and examples from the book.

Help!! Parents & Students: If you have books on last year's list you no longer want, we can offer those books to other students at a low price. Please bring the books to the MS/HS office immediately. If it is a financial burden to buy the books, please let the office know so we can match you with some of those that were donated. Money will be used to buy copies that can be used for this purpose.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Mertz at or at 614-471-9270 ext. 2268.

Do not wait until the beginning of August to find your book(s) or begin reading!
